Super Mario Odyssey was one of the first titles shown for the Switch when it was first unveiled, and it was the one that sold me on the device. Today, Nintendo showed off more of the game than ever before and revealed a fun, whimsical adventure that should please fans of all ages for years to come. Beyond combining the usual 3D Mario platforming mechanics, Odyssey also features traditional 2D sections as well as murals that work a bit like A Link Between Worlds where you can blend into them and then shift into other areas of the world.
There is also a possession mechanic where Mario can throw his hat on either enemies or bystanders to take control of them. Controlling a Bullet Bill not only puts a hat and giant mustache on them, but also allows you to move the burly projectile around to progress through the stage. The post-show treehouse on the event didn’t just reveal the murals, but also that the game will not use lives – but will instead deduct coins from your total. It’s a bit like how you can get a failure state in Mario Kart, but be saved by coins thanks to Lakitu. Super Mario Odyssey looks like a must-buy when it releases on October 17 later this year.
