The original Mighty Gunvolt was a bit of a mini-game of sorts. It gave players the chance to play an 8-bit Mega Man-style game with Beck, Gunvolt, and others while offering up enough content to both leave you satisfied and yet wanting more. Its handful of levels may not have lasted long, but they were satisfying and rekindled the same feelings I had as a child playing Mega Man games on the NES. Mighty Gunvolt Burst is the sequel and mixes in a more 16-bit look to things, with Beck and Gunvolt returning to the mix.
New to Burst is the burst combo – where enemies explode when finished off up close to give you extra points. Chaining these together brings about burst combos, and you can even beat bosses with this setup. A customization system will allow you to change your loadout to include homing shots and even armor-piercing bullets – but you can’t go too crazy. You can only change your loadout to the degree that you afford it with cost points. Those who enjoy exploration will be rewarded with 8-bit style pixel stickers, and you can even earn them as rare drops from enemies. HD rumble will featured and allow you to find hidden items and areas more easily – so it isn’t an essential part of things, but is a nice bonus. Mighty Gunvolt Burst hits both the Switch and 3DS eShop for $9.99, with the Switch getting it two weeks earlier on June 15.
